What is baccarat casino game?
If you’re new to casino baccarat then sit back and have a read. We’ve put together a bit of beginner’s information including the rules and a betting guide to help you understand how this exciting casino game works and how you can win big playing it.
Baccarat is a table game played with cards and originating in France about 700 years ago. As card games go, it’s a pretty exciting one to play and once you know how to play, it’s pretty straight forward. It may not be like most card games you have probably come across before in that your picture cards like your King and Queen are actually worth zero. So is the 10. But we’ll get to that later.
Baccarat is the table game that usually gets highlighted in the big spy movies of yesteryear. Trim suits and martinis, cigar smoke and pretty girls, that’s what you usually find crowded around the baccarat table.
There are also different types of baccarat available to play depending on the casino and the part of the world. Banque is a version usually played in Europe and comprises of three hands – one for the banker and two player hands. Punto Banco is the type you usually find in most other casinos. In Chemin de fer, the dealer will deal four down cards. You might have also heard of this type of version known as ‘Railroad’.
How to play baccarat online?
We’ve put together a bit of the basics of the game for those new to it but there’s nothing like actually playing it for real for it to all make sense. Everything’s easy once you know how and winning at online baccarat could be the easiest thing in the world.
Just like in a live casino, baccarat online is played at tables featuring players, bankers and a caller. Each player is betting on the outcome of a card draw and they will bet that either the banker’s hand will win, the player’s hand will win, or that there is a tie and both the player’s hand and the banker’s hand are of equal value. There’s a bit of French in the rule book owing to the game’s origin so each round of play is called a coup and betting options include a wager called a cheval which lets you split your bet over two hands.
So, there are two hands – the banker’s hand and the player’s hand. Easy. You’re used to seeing that.
Right at the start and after the cards are shuffled the dealer burns cards, or discards them. It’s usually the top three to six cards.
After the opening bet is made and you’ve chosen how much you will wager on the hand you think will win, the cards are dealt, and the banker and the player each get two cards dealt face up and put in the appropriate boxes corresponding to each party. The outcomes of each available, remember, are that the player wins, the banker wins, or that there is a tie and the cards of both hands are equal.
If you bet on your hand and your hand wins, then you win the bet. Sounds pretty straight forward. Your winnings are twice your wager. So, if you bet $25 then you win $50. If you chose to bet on the dealer’s hand, so winning banker bets, then your win is 95% of your wager.
The winning hand is whichever hand is closest to nine. A natural win of hand that totals nine is called la grande and a hand totalling 8 is called la petite. That mind sound fairly straight forward but remember what we said a little earlier about how the picture cards are actually worth zero in this game? Well, so is 10.
So, basically, all the other cards except for 10 and the picture cards are worth their face value, with the Ace worth 1 point. You want the hand that you have chosen to bet on to be closest to nine to win. If you fancy betting on a tie with the banker, then the odds for that win pay 8 to 1.
If the cards drawn equal 5 or less then a third card can be drawn by the player otherwise, with totals of 6 or 7, the player will stand. The banker may choose to pull a third card or he may not. After the draw is complete, the totals of the banker’s hand and the player’s hand are compared. The higher hand wins.
A dragon bet is a type of bonus wager you can play which allows you to bet that the winning hand has won by at least four points.
Like all of Joe Fortune’s online casino games, myths about the house always winning are just myths. However, most strategists will advise you to place your bet on the banker’s hand and the number of wins on these bets are reflected in the odds paid for the win. The banker enjoys a slight advantage, especially if a third card needs to be drawn. A common betting strategy is to bet on the banker until he loses then switch your bet to the player’s hand. But everyone’s different. You might develop your own strategy for cleaning up at the baccarat tables!
Winning a tie has about a 14% chance on the draw so if you’re playing to win that might not be your first, go-to bet of the evening. If you’re feeling particularly lucky then why not?
The aim of any game at Joe Fortune is to have fun while you’re playing so we suggest you try a few rounds at the table to get your eye in. Once you’re actually playing – and winning! – the rules and the strategies will start to gel.
